Knowing What You Want in Life – How Desire ISN’T a Bad Thing

Hello everyone.  Today we’re going to talk about knowing what you want in life.  Everyone wants something out of life, whether it be something big like a nice house or car, to something small like wanting a friend.  I know that for the longest time I felt like I couldn’t have anything that I wanted, but now that’s not true at all.

I think that getting what you want will actually make you a happier person.  That’s one reason I’m a black sheep in my family.  Below I will tell you how to get what you want.

Desire is Key

I know what some of you may be thinking.  There are some religions that teach that desire is ultimately a bad thing.  That we should stay away from our desires, because it is our desires is what causes us to sin.  I, on the other hand, don’t think this at all.  I think, if anything it’s very normal to have desires.

The first thing you should do is to think about what it is you really want.  I want you to visualize yourself getting the things you want.  I want you to visualize with the intent of already having what you want.  How does that feel?  What does that look like to you?  For example, and this is kind of a poor example, but what if you lost your keys?  What would it feel like if you found your keys?  What does that look like to you?

Or maybe you don’t know what you want.  If that’s the case what would if feel like if you knew what you want?  What would it feel like to have a purpose in life?  Your desires will help steer you in the direction of getting what you want, you just have to consciously take action to get to that point.

How to Figure Out what it is You Want

If you don’t really have an idea of what you want, maybe start out with what you don’t want.  Many of you should be able to to figure out what you don’t want faster.  In a matter of fact, start paying attention to what you don’t want.  And then, start playing a game of opposites.  Once you figure out what you don’t want, spin it around and talk about what you would want instead.

Now sometimes the answer won’t always be obvious.  For example, you may not want to be fat, but the opposite of that for you might not be to be skinny.  The answer that might work for you could be I want to be at a healthy weight and to eat healthier.  Does that make sense?

If you know what it is you don’t want, more than likely it’ll help you figure out what you do want.  I want you to think about something you don’t want, let’s say you don’t want to be poor.  I want you to visualize what it would look like not to be poor.  And then I want you to ask yourself how that situation could be better.

And keep thinking about how that situation could look better.  You want to keep doing this till you figure out what is the best possible scenario for you, and once you figure that out, THAT is what you really want.

I want you to also rely on your feelings.  I want you to think about your feelings as a road map, that will ultimately lead you to the thing you want the most.  I want you to really look inside yourself and ask yourself “How does this make me feel?  Do I feel happy, or mad?  Do I feel inspired or uninspired?”

What you want to do is you want to identify any negative feelings you have.  It doesn’t really matter the reason behind what you feel, but just try to identify what gives you a negative feeling.  You can then use those feelings to think about how you can get a more positive outcome.  So, how can I be inspired?  How can I be happier?  How can I do my work to the best of its ability?  Etc..

Stop Martyring Yourself

Many of you that are reading this, was probably taught at one time that life isn’t about what you want.  It’s about helping others and putting others first before you.  This could not be further from the truth.  You probably never ask yourself what it is you want, and therefore, you wouldn’t know anything about what it is you really want from this life.

I want you to take out a sheet of paper, and on the top of it, I want you to put “I want…” and with the hand that you don’t usually write with, I want you to list anything that pops into your head.  Don’t judge what you put down, just start writing down what it is you want without judgement.

After doing all of that, I want you to ask yourself this question at the bottom of the page.  If I could do/be anything in this life at all, what would I do/be?

Ask Yourself “Why?”

Now I want you to ask yourself why?  What I want you to do is, going with the example of not wanting to be poor.  Why don’t want to be poor?  Maybe your answer was, I want to be rich.  Then you would ask yourself “Why would you want to be rich?”  And you could say “Because I want to be financially well-off.”  So, in this case, the root of why you don’t want to be poor is because you want to be financially well-off.

You want to keep asking why till you get to the root cause of why you want what you want.  I want you to also pay attention to people who are happy.  Why are these people happy?  Be a happiness observer, just sit back and watch happy people.

There really isn’t a wrong answer to any of these questions.  And, think about it, let’s say you make a decision you regret making.  Well welcome to the human race.  But you can shift that.  You don’t have to be stuck in a bad decision, you can always change your mind and do something else.  In saying that, you really can’t make a mistake.

In Conclusion

The Universe was made for our happiness.  What you want one day, may not be what you want the next day.  We never see the finish line, but that’s because the finish line is always moving away from us.  The closer we get to finishing one of our goals, the further the finish line goes away.

Most of us want happiness.  Why not make happiness the main goal?  Because the more things that you do to make you happy, the better quality of life you’ll have.  And, you’ll always have to work on becoming happy, but, anything that is worth doing requires a lot of work.

So be happy.  You can get what you want, and still be happy.  Don’t feel limited, feel unlimited.  The Universe is your sandbox, so make sandcastles.  Live the life you always wanted to live, and most of all, NEVER look back!
